BALCATTA-based Gold Martial Arts brought home eight medals at the 2018 Karate State Championships held at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup on April 8.

Sorrento residents Laura Golding and Isaac James clinched gold medals in Kumite while Rocco Fowler of Tuart Hill and Benjamin Quinn of Beechboro won silver medals for Kumite and Kata respectively.

Golding also won another bronze medal in Kumite.

Beechboro resident Cameron Quinn, Lester Maru John of Nollamara and Maddison Phillips of Gwelup took out bronze medals.

The athletes are now vying for state team selection, which will be announced at the West Australian Karate Federation’s Annual Awards and presentation dinner on April 28.

Chief instructor Mark Golding said the “outstanding” results were achieved due to hard work, perseverance and dedication from athletes who started training in its new facility in January.

“Watching each athlete grow in confidence with every competition as well as the support they provide for each other no matter how young or old has been very satisfying,” he said.

“The new modern purpose designed full-time training facility enables our athletes to prepare in an environment which provides every opportunity for success in competition.”

Golding said the club’s goals were for its athletes to make the state team and have strong representation and performances against Australia’s best at the Australian Karate Federation National Championships held in Caloundra, Queensland from August 3 to 5.

The club will next compete in the WA Karate League Wado Open on May 27 at ECU Joondalup.

Gold Martial Arts expansion leads to new Balcatta club

A MARTIAL arts club has opened its first-owned facility in Balcatta after seven years of producing national karate athletes in Nollamara.

Gold Martial Arts started classes on January 15 and will be officially opened in mid-February.

Owner and head instructor Mark Golding, also a national coach, said the growth of the club required a bigger facility.

“The whole idea of securing this property is not only because it is much bigger than the previous property but we want to grow the club and look after this northern corridor of Perth,” he said.

Mr Golding said the new facility was previously occupied by Blinds Magic and the club had to do extensive renovations.

The club offers programs for three-year-olds to adults.

On the back of a successful West Australian Karate League campaign, Mr Golding’s students are back training ahead of the first event in March and state team trials.
