Karate: Beechboro brothers aim for national success

BEECHBORO brothers are eyeing more glory at the 2019 Australian Karate Federation National Championships in August.

Benjamin (13) and Cameron (11) Quinn are members of Gold Martial Arts in Balcatta and are the reigning state champions.

At the WAKL Wado Open held at ECU Joondalup on May 19, Benjamin won a bronze medal in the 12s and 13s under and over 45kg category while Cameron won a silver medal in the boys elite kumite 11 years category.

They are now preparing for the national championships which will be held in Launceston, Tasmania from August 2 to 4.

Benjamin, who attends Hampton Senior High School, said his goal was to win a gold medal at nationals, which he has been competing in since 2016.

“It is a lot of fun at the nationals,” he said.

“It is nice to have a bit more of a challenge than local and state (competitions).

“I just like fighting and the competition between your friends who you train with and getting better together.”

Cameron, who attends Beechboro Primary School, said he looked forward to having fun, meeting new people and gaining more experience at nationals.

“It feels good to know that what you’re doing is actually working,” he said.

“You are executing it well so you achieve stuff.

“My goal is to do the best I can at nationals.”

Chief instructor Mark Golding said while the club had many families, there were none like the Quinn brothers who were on the same competitive pathway.

The brothers are working towards their junior black belts later this year.
