Sensei Mark, 5th Dan, Shito-Ryu Karate and 2nd Dan, Shotokan Karate, formally started his martial arts training in 1981. He has a Bachelor of Education in Health & Physical Education, and a Certificate IV in Training & Assessment, with 25+ years of teaching experience in secondary schools in Western Australia.

Training in Japan was nothing short of extraordinary. Practicing at Kyoto’s historic Butokuden, a dojo steeped in tradition, gave our members the rare opportunity to immerse themselves in an environment where discipline, respect, and precision are not just taught, but lived every day.![]()

Each training session offered more than technical development. Under the guidance of highly respected instructors, we explored deeper aspects of martial arts from philosophy and mindset to the importance of humility and continuous growth. These lessons challenged us to look beyond technique and reflect on our own journey as practitioners.![]()

Outside the dojo, Japan delivered a cultural experience just as powerful. Kyoto welcomed us with the beauty of cherry blossoms in full bloom, and our travels through its iconic landmarks added another layer of meaning to the trip.![]()

This tour was more than a martial arts experience; it was a shared journey. Together with our partners at Samurai Karate Australia, Kimekai Martial Arts, and Rocky Ryu Karate, we built lasting friendships and strengthened our connection to the martial arts community.![]()

An outstanding performance from our athletes at this year’s Australian Open Karate Championships! Competing against 73 clubs, 7 nations, a total of 993 entries, Gold Martial Arts proudly secured 5th place overall on the medal table from 9 athletes entered, a remarkable achievement at such a high level event.![]()

These results are a testament to the athletes’ discipline, perseverance and team spirit, reflecting countless hours of training and commitment.![]()

Special recognition goes to Sadhbh Smith-Flanagan and Zai Portughes Preston, who continue to demonstrate strong commitment and dedication to their training. While they did not medal on this occasion, their effort, determination, and willingness to challenge themselves reflect the true spirit of our club. There is no doubt that their persistence and hard work will lead to future success.![]()
