Tuart Hill: Rocco Fowler looking to make mark at national karate championships

RISING karate star Rocco Fowler of Tuart Hill is looking to build on his recent WA Karate Federation Athlete of the Year award at the national championships in August.

The Trinity College Year 6 student (11), who trains at Gold Martial Arts in Balcatta, was also rewarded with his second state team selection at last month’sWA Karate Federation Annual Awards and State Team presentation held at Hillarys Yacht Club.

Fellow club members Laura Golding of Sorrento, Lester Maru John of Nollamara, Maddison Phillips of Gwelup and Beechboro pair Benjamin and Cameron Quinn were also selected in the team.

Fowler said he was quite shocked to have won the award.

“I had a good competitive season last year and I feel honoured to have won,” he said.

“It’s an honour to be on the WA team and I can’t wait to get out there and give it my best.”

He trains in both Kata and Kumite disciplines, but Kata is his specialty and he will compete in the boys 10-11 years Kata division.

“My best result so far is a silver medal at the WA State Championships and a bronze medal at the WA Karate League (WAKL) Senshinkan Open,” Fowler said.

“I am hoping for a good result at the upcoming WAKL Wado Open on May 27.”

He said he hoped to get through a few rounds and show the referees his potential in Kata.
