GOLD Martial Arts club took home 18 medals in its first Western Australian Karate League (WAKL) competition of 2018 – just two months since opening its Balcatta headquarters.

The club had 25 members compete in the Senshinkan Open on March 18 held at Edith Cowan University in Joondalup.

Chief instructor Mark Golding said athletes of all ages produced strong performances and results in both Kata and Kumite disciplines.

“I’m confident the success will continue throughout the year,” he said.

“The implementation of a specialised sports karate program has made a significant difference in terms of preparing our members both mentally and physically for the WAKL.”

Tuart Hill resident Rocco Fowler, Laura Golding of Sorrento, Lester Maru John of Nollamara, Maddison Phillips of Gwelup and Beechboro’s Benjamin and Cameron Quinn are part of the state squad for 2018.

Golding said these members were vying for state team selection for the Australian Karate Federation National Championships in Caloundra, Queensland from August 3 to 5.

“As part of selection process, all six members are currently preparing for the State Championships which will be held on April 8 at ECU Joondalup,” he said.
